C-ID Summer Cinema

The Seattle Asian American Film Festival, in partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation and InterIM CDA, hosts a month of Chinatown-International District outdoor movies at Hing Hay Park in the summertime.

Join us for free and family-friendly outdoor programming every Saturday evening in August, featuring performances by local musical acts, face painting, art making, and popcorn for all. Once the sun goes down, the movie begins!

Set around a family gathering to celebrate Easter Sunday, the comedy is based on Jo Koy’s life experiences and stand-up comedy.

Rachel Chu is happy to accompany her longtime boyfriend, Nick, to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Thrust into the spotlight, Rachel must now contend with jealous socialites, quirky relatives and Nick’s disapproving mother.

August 10: Iron Monkey (Cantonese)

In a desperate and unjust land, where government corruption rules the day, only one man has the courage to challenge the system and fight back. They call him “Iron Monkey.” Under the shadow of night, in the silence before dawn, he fights to give hope to the poor and the oppressed. Although no one knows his name and no one knows where he comes from, his heroism has made him a living legend to the people and a wanted man to the powers that be.

August 17: Mirai (English Dub)

Presented in conjunction with Japantown (Nihonmachi Night), Mirai tells the story of A young boy named Kun feels forgotten by his family when his little sister Mirai arrives. Running away from home, Kun stumbles upon a magical garden that serves as a time-travelling gateway where he encounters his mother as a little girl and has a series of adventures with his baby sister, who is all grown up, opening a new perspective on his world.

August 25: Up

Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year-old balloon salesman, is about to fulfill a lifelong dream. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, he flies away to the South American wilderness. But curmudgeonly Carl’s worst nightmare comes true when he discovers a little boy named Russell, voiced by Jordan Nagai, a stowaway aboard the balloon-powered house.

August 4: Rumble in the Bronx

The movie that brought movie star Jackie Chan into the American mainstream. Jackie Chan plays a young man visiting and helping his uncle in New York City who finds himself forced to fight a street gang and the mob with his martial art skills.

August 11: Mulan (Moved to August 18)

To save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China’s greatest heroines in the process. Celebrate the 20th anniversary of this groundbreaking film. Come sing-along with us!

August 18: Iron Monkey (Cancelled)

A martial artist/doctor steals from the corrupt authorities as a masked thief to give to the poor while another martial artist is forced to hunt him down. But a major threat unites them as a powerful and traitorous Shaolin monk takes over the authorities. This film stars international superstar Donnie Yen and directed by Yuen Woo-ping, fight choreographer for movies like The Matrix, Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2, and the Ip Man series. 

August 25: Allegiance: The Musical

Inspired by true events, “Allegiance” is the story of the Kimura family, whose lives are upended when they and 120,000 other Japanese-Americans are forced to leave their homes following the events of Pearl Harbor. Starring George Takei and Lea Salonga.

All his life, an ordinary young man (Stephen Chow) has been treated like dirt. Still, he’s never given up believing that all the world’s problems could be solved with a little kung fu. So he’s teaming up with a band of misfits – six friends who were kung fu masters in their youth – to form a soccer team that only he believes has a chance to win a $1 million grand prize. Together, they’re going to apply their hidden talents to a whole new game — and soccer will never be the same.

August 17: Lilo and Stitch

A tale of a young girl’s close encounter with the galaxy’s most wanted extraterrestrial. Lilo is a lonely Hawaiian girl who adopts a small ugly “dog,” whom she names Stitch. Stitch would be the perfect pet if he weren’t in reality a genetic experiment who has escaped from an alien planet and crash-landed on Earth. Through her love, faith and unwavering belief in ohana, the Hawaiian concept of family, Lilo helps unlock Stitch’s heart and gives him the ability to care for someone else.

August 27: Enter the Dragon

Bruce Lee plays a martial-arts expert determined to help capture the narcotics dealer whose gang was responsible for the death of his sister. Lee enters a kung fu competition in an attempt to fight his way to the dealer’s headquarters with the help of some friends.

August 9: Linsanity

In 2012, the entire media landscape was abuzz about one man, basketball sensation Jeremy Lin.  In LINSANITY, director Evan Jackson Leong goes beyond the headlines to uncover the real story behind this cultural phenomenon.

August 16: The Haumāna

Jonny Kealoha, a charismatic host of a struggling Waikiki lū`au show, is appointed as the successor to a high school boy’s hula class when his former Kumu Hula (master hula teacher) passes away. He becomes as much a student as a teacher through the demands of leading the boys to a significant cultural event and rediscovers the sanctity of the culture he had previously abandoned.

August 24: Awesome Asian Bad Guys

Our last movie of the Summer Outdoor Film Series is AWESOME ASIAN BAD GUYS starring Seattle’s own Yuji Okumoto, bad guy from Karate Kid II, who will be making an appearance at the screening!  The hard-hitting Asian bad guys in flicks like DIE HARD, BLOODSPORT, and KARATE KID 2 were often cooler than the heroes they fought.  But they’d usually have a 2 minute lifespan before they were mortally wounded or beat to a pulp.  AWESOME ASIAN BAD GUYS celebrates Asian bad guys (and girls) and their continuing kick-ass contributions to pop culture history.

August 17: One Big Hapa Family

ONE BIG HAPA FAMILY explores why 95 percent of Japanese-Canadians — more than any other ethnic group — marry interracially and how their mixed race children perceive their unique multiracial identities.

August 24: Jake Shimabukuro: Life On Four Strings

This intimate documentary gives viewers a singular glimpse into Jake Shimabukuro, ukulele virtuoso, but also Jake, the young boy who grew up in a modest apartment to a single mother and unsuspectingly rose to international stardom.
