Letter from the Co-Directors
Thank you for your interest in becoming a sponsor of the Seattle Asian American Film Festival (SAAFF) 2013. Scheduled for January 25-27, 2013, this event will provide a rare opportunity for audiences to see films and videos by and about Asian Americans.
Asian American populations comprise a vital community in the greater Seattle area and can be found in all sectors of our society, with varying levels of education, diverse socio-economic backgrounds, and vastly different immigration histories. Asian American representation is difficult to find in mainstream media, and when they do appear they are usually limited to secondary, tokenized, or stereotyped roles. Asian Americans from Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and the Philippines are especially invisible, often left out of Seattle history and political representation.
Through SAAFF 2013, we seek to provide a space for voices of all Asian Americans, including Pacific Islanders and Southeast Asian Americans. Throughout the festival, we will showcase works by northwest Asian American filmmakers, as well as films from across the country dealing with Asian American people, issues and themes. All screenings will take place at the Tateuchi Story Theatre at the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle's International District.
We have exciting sponsorship opportunities for supporters of the festival. We hope that you will be able to join us as a partner in presenting this program.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please don't hesitate to contact us at info@SeattleAAFF.org.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Kevin Bang and Vanessa Au
Co-Directors, Seattle Asian American Film Festival
Festival Background
From 2003-2007, The Northwest Asian American Film Festival (NWAAFF) directed by Wes Kim showcased works by Asian American and Asian filmmakers in four evenings of screenings. Since 2007, the program has been on a hiatus. This year, new festival directors Kevin Bang and Vanessa Au are leading the effort to revive the program, and in this effort, the festival will have a new name – the Seattle Asian American Film Festival (SAAFF).
Despite the fact that Seattle has a strong reputation for supporting non-mainstream films and videos, there are very few opportunities for audiences to see media works by and about Asian Americans. This event will provide significant opportunities to showcase a wealth of stories that have never been told or have not been widely shared.
Asian Population in Greater Seattle:
Asian Americans are a diverse and vital community in the Greater Seattle Area. It includes, for example, of both fourth-generation Japanese Americans as well as first-generation Cambodian Americans,. However, our collective voices are difficult to find in mainstream media, and despite Seattle’s strong reputation for supporting non-mainstream films and videos, there are very few opportunities for audiences to see media works by and about Asian Americans. Through SAAFF 2013, we provide a space for voices of all Asian Americans, including Pacific Islanders and Southeast Asian Americans.
Festival Programming
SAAFF 2013 will present programs comprised of short and feature-length films representing a variety of genres including narrative, documentary, animation, and more. The festival films will be programmed through both a curatorial process, as well as an open call for entries.
Audience
Audiences will consist primarily of people from the larger Asian American and film going communities in Seattle. Targeted outreach efforts will be achieved through community and student groups. We anticipate 500-700 people will attend the three-day festival. Priced at $10 for general admission, tickets will be affordable. Discounted tickets will also be available to students, seniors and groups. The Tateuchi Story Theatre at Wing Luke Museum has off-street parking and is serviced by several major Metro bus lines. Additionally, with wheelchair accessibility, the theater is entirely accessible for differently-abled patrons.
